African-American Studies

The African-American Studies MA program is designed to provide graduate-level training in African-American studies to scholars, teachers, and professionals whose career or professional needs may be furthered or served by intensive scholarly engagement.

American Studies

The MA program in American Studies is housed in the Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race at Columbia University.

Anthropology MA

The Department of Anthropology offers two free-standing MA programs: the MA in Sociocultural Anthropology, and the MA in Museum Anthropology.

The English proficiency requirement is based on the official language of the country in which the undergraduate (or bachelor’s) degree was earned, regardless of an applicant’s citizenship.
The MA in Museum Anthropology is offered by the Department of Anthropology at Columbia in collaboration with the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH). It is a professional degree for those already employed in, or interested in, moving into the museum field.
The free-standing MA program in Sociocultural Anthropology is designed specifically for those who wish to cultivate a deeper understanding of the discipline of anthropology and improve their particular professional competence, but who intend only to pursue the MA degree.

Art History and Archaeology, MA

The Department of Art History and Archaeology offers programs of instruction in the history, theory, and criticism of art and archaeology. These programs are intended to prepare students for careers in scholarship and teaching and in curatorial work and museum administration, as well as for independent research and critical writing.

International and World History

(MA/MSc, with London School of Economics)

Full-Time in New York (Year 1) and London (Year 2): Free-Standing MA (housed in the Department of History, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences) and MSc (housed in the Department of International History, London School of Economics)
